History and Geography – Year 6

Four lessons per week are allocated to History and Geography within year 6, although timing are flexible and may vary throughout the year.  Topics change twice yearly after February half term and where possible, cross curricular links are made with English and art.

  • Natural Hazards
  • Human Pressures

History – Britain Since 1930

  • World War 2 – causes, evacuation, the Blitz, rationing, how did it end?
  • Investigating changes
  • Changes in our lifetime

 

Skills

Emphasis is placed on the importance of using and interpreting a range of historical and geographical sources. Skills in map work and the use of photographs and artefacts to gain an understanding of the past are acquired throughout the topics. IT is also used effectively as a source of research as well as a tool for presenting information.

 

Assessment

Assessment in History and Geography takes three main forms:

  • Ongoing teacher assessment within the classroom
  • Group presentations
  • Longer written pieces of work at the end of a topic
