Year 5 visited Howick Quarry.  It is providing the whinstone for the new road going to Ashington.  The manager of the quarry took us on a mini bus tour of the land and told us how the rock is extracted, processed and then the land put back into a natural condition.

We worked with the Wildlife Trust and carried out activities relating to different types of rock.  We also did a mapping exercise where each group hid boxes for another group to find.  The treasure hunt at the end of the day allowed the children to go off, find the boxes and then make a model with the parts that were found.
